SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony Alpha A7 Series

We have been using SmallRig cages for quite some time now and we think it is about time to provide some feedback/review on their products base on real world usage.

We own the A6000/A6300 cage, the A7Xii series cage and many more of their accessories for various usage. We are also using a SmallRig cage on our Atomos recorder! Majority of the purchase are through their website(https://www.smallrig.com/) while some are from local retailers such as T K Foto(https://www.tkfoto.com.sg/).

The general build of the cages is fantastic and it fits the cameras perfectly. Unlike some generic camera cage, you do not need to worry about the camera sliding off or shifting. Having the cage on although does make the camera bulkier, does not affect the functionality and yet provide much more mounting flexibility with the various thread holes and cold shoe.

The cage itself comes equipped with one cold shoe mount, a nato rail along the side, a rosette mount and many 1/4 and 3/8 thread holes around the cage. All these thread holes make mounting of additional accessories possible. Be it directly mounting of other equipments onto the cage itself or by using of additional parts that are available for purchase, you definitely have the freedom to customise the cage to fit your needs.

Bt far I have not had any experience of the mount shifting. There is an additional security feature of this mount. As seen, the arrow direct you to the correct direction when putting on your accessories. It is a one way mount thus you do not have to worry of your equipment sliding through and fall off from the front.

Nato rail piece - A direct screw on handle can be purchase to attached it to the top of the cage. However, in order to have a easily removable handle option, we decided to go for this nato rail. An allen key of the right size is also provided when purchasing this piece. Simply screw it onto any 1/4 thread hole on the cage. The brown metal button on the sides of the rail is a safety mechanism that prevent the camera from sliding off the handle in situations that the handle is not tighten fully.

Nato handle - There are many different handles available by SmallRig. They are either with thread holes around the handle or with rubber grips. This particular handle that we uses have various thread holes and providing added functionality. Apart being a fixed grip handle, this model allows you to easily shift the position of the handle by adjusting the 2 screws as seen. An allen key is cleverly flushed into one side of the handle so you do not have to ever worry that you do not have an allen key with you. The allen key is secured with magnets thus it will not fall off.

I believe for all videographer, this function is especially good as it allows you to shift the handle position to fit your various set up. The handle itself have more cold shoe mount that allows you to mount your equipments.
